Statistical indicators of his scientific activity: author of 115 books, 1,425 articles, including 585 scientific articles published in our country and 182 abroad, compiler, editor, scientific advisor of 295 books. He was the scientific supervisor of 59 candidate of sciences, 17 doctor of sciences dissertations.

Main scientific achievements: research of stages and problems of Azerbaijani literature of the 19th-20th centuries, the heritage of J. Mammadguluzadeh, O.F. Nemanzadeh, M. Shakhtakhtinsky, theoretical problems of romantic poetry, the concept of periodization and stages of development of Azerbaijani literature, etc.

Biography: Born on October 16, 1949 in the village of Danzik, Sharur district, Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

In 1971, he graduated from the Nakhchivan Branch of the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical Institute (now the Azerbaijan State Pedagogical University) with honors in the specialty "Azerbaijani Language and Literature". In 1971-1975, he began his labor activity at the Danzik village school of the Sharur district of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

In 1975-1996, he was engaged in scientific and pedagogical activities at Nakhchivan State University, was the chairman of the Student Scientific Society (1968-1971, 1975-1990), worked as vice-rector for scientific affairs in 1991-1996, and was the rector of that university in 1996-2013.

He was the Vice-President of ANAS in 2013-2019, the First Vice-President in 2019-2021, and the Vice-President in 2021-2022. On October 25, 2022, he was elected President of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences at the General Meeting of ANAS, and was approved for this position by the head of state on October 26, 2022. He has also been the General Director of the Nizami Ganjavi Institute of Literature of ANAS since 2013.

In 1980, he defended his candidacy on the topic “Artistic features of Azerbaijani romantic lyrics of the early 20th century”, in 1996 he defended his doctoral dissertation on the topic “J. Mammadguluzadeh: environment and contemporaries”, and in 1997 he received the scientific title of professor. In 2001, he was elected a corresponding member of ANAS, and in 2003, a full member.

His books and articles have been published and his lectures have been heard in Turkey, Russia, China, France, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Ukraine, Iran, Mongolia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, South Korea, Lithuania, Georgia, Egypt, Turkmenistan and Kyrgyzstan. 7 people under his scientific supervision have defended their PhDs, and 39 people have defended their PhDs.

He conducted research on literary trends, literary types and genres, and for the first time determined that satire is a literary type. He developed the concepts of Azerbaijaniism, periodization of literature and Molla Nasreddinism. He has numerous studies on the history of Azerbaijani literature of the 19th-21st centuries. He researched the legacy of J. Mammadguluzadeh, published his 4-volume "Works" in Baku (2004), his 2-volume "Selected Works" in Nakhchivan (2009), and selected works in Russia (1999), Pakistan (2004), Egypt (2008), Hungary (2011), Lithuania (2017), Bulgaria, Uzbekistan and Tajikistan (2019). He found the successors of Mirza Jalil's generation in France and Iran (1992-1998), organized the visit of his heirs in Poland to Baku (November 16-21, 2019). He published unknown works by M.T. Sidgi, M. Shahtakhtli, M.S. Ordubadi, E. Sultanov and M.J. Jafarov.

In 1998-2005, he was elected a deputy of the Supreme Assembly of the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic, headed the International Relations and Human Rights Commission. He is a deputy of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan of the III (2005), IV (2010), V (2015) and VI (2020) convocations. As the Chairman of the Science and Education Committee of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan (2015-2020), he prepared the laws “On Science” (2016), “On Preschool Education” (2017), “On Vocational Education” (2018), “On General Education” (2019). He is the Chairman of the Toponymy Commission of the Milli Majlis (2015). He is the author of the drafts of the new Charter of ANAS (2014, 2019, 2022), the film “Temple of Science”, the “Academy March”, the organizer of the “Physics and Lyrics” project, and exhibitions of fine and applied arts. He was a member of the Political Council of the New Azerbaijan Party (2013-2021).

He is a member of the Atatürk Culture, Language and History High Institution (1999), a member of the Coordination Council of World Azerbaijanis (2001), a full member of the International Academy of Informatization (2006) and the International Chingiz Aitmatov Academy (2018), an honorary doctor of St. Petersburg (2015) and South Russian universities (2017), and the Tashkent University of Uzbek Language and Literature (2021).

He was awarded the honorary title of “Honored Scientist” of the Republic of Azerbaijan (1999), the orders of “Glory” (2007), “Honor” (2009), the 1st degree “For Service to the Fatherland” (2019), the “Rasul Riza Award” of the AYB, gold, silver medals and other medals of the International Turkic Academy, and the badge “For the best organization of students' scientific research work”. He is a laureate of the Oxford University "Name in Science" and the International Socrates Prize.
