The 28th of May, the Independence Day is one of the most significant days directly related to the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. It left a deep impression in the minds of our nation that has a centuries-old and rich statehood history. A century ago the Azerbaijani nation introduced the best example of independent, free, and democratic state-building to mankind. It etched its name forever in world history with the decisions adopted by the People’s Republic.
The decisions adopted by the founders of the Republic during its 23 months of existence, such as the establishment of the first parliamentary republic of the Muslim East, the adoption of our tricolor state flag, the declaration of the Azerbaijani language as a state language, the creation of the national army, start of work of the Baku State University, giving women the right to vote for the first time, granting equal citizenship rights to everyone by eliminating racial, national, and religious differences and other significant political decisions played an essential role in preserving the idea of independence of our nation during the Soviet period.
The most important thing is that the leadership of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic gained international recognition for the ADR in a complex diplomatic political atmosphere at the Supreme Council of the Paris Peace Conference and prevented the disappearance of Azerbaijan as a state from the political map of the world.
Finally taking advantage of political conditions, created at the end of the XX century, our nation put an end to the 70-years of Soviet power, restored its state independence and continued its rich statehood traditions.
A great son of the Azerbaijani nation, outstanding state figure National Leader Heydar Aliyev and President Ilham Aliyev have always respected the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic and its founders and the 80th, the 90th, and the 100th jubilees of the ADR were solemnly celebrated in our country.
National Leader Heydar Aliyev said during the solemn meeting on the occasion of the Day of Republic on May 26, 1996: “The period of existence of Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was very complicated, contradictory and difficult. The works conducted in such a difficult condition and the heritage that came to the next generations, to us, perfectly reflect the historical significance of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic. Mainly this democracy, national freedom, atmosphere of independence have stayed deep inside hearts of our nation in the following years and finally at the end of this century led our nation to state independence”.
President Ilham Aliyev declared 2018 year as the “Year of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic” and the 100th anniversary of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic was solemnly celebrated in the republic and abroad.
This year Azerbaijani nation has celebrated Independence Day as a victorious nation that has restored its territorial integrity and sovereignty and the tricolor flag of the Azerbaijan Democratic Republic is flying proudly in all territories of our republic.
