At ANAS General Meeting held on February 20, ANAS Academician-Secretary, Academician Arif Hashimov delivered a report on the topic “Scientific Report for the 2024 Academic Year”.
Academician Arif Hashimov noted that the year 2024, accompanied by a number of achievements in terms of the socio-economic and cultural-spiritual development of the Republic of Azerbaijan, was successful for Azerbaijani science, including the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences. He noted that the reform-oriented measures that began at ANAS in late 2022 were continued consistently and comprehensively in 2024, as well as in 2023. As a result, the structure of the Academy was fundamentally modernized, the new priorities of science were aligned with the strategic goals of state policy and the challenges of world science, the participation of science in the implementation of the state's socio-economic, cultural-spiritual and ideological policy was significantly strengthened, the personnel potential was optimized as much as possible, international scientific relations were expanded, and the Academy's reputation both internationally, especially in the Turkic world, and in the republic, increased significantly.
In 2024, scientists working in scientific institutions published 521 books and monographs, 118 textbooks, 3561 of which were published abroad (1192 of which were in impact factor journals included in the Web of Science and Scopus databases), and 9245 articles and theses. 45507 references were made to the works of scientists.
Academician A. Hashimov, who stated that 2024 was declared the "Year of Solidarity for the Green World" in the Republic of Azerbaijan and that large-scale events were carried out by ANAS in this direction, said that a total of 71 events were organized by the scientific departments, scientific institutions and organizations of the Academy, 30 books and 32 articles were prepared.
He also noted that during the 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29) held in Baku for 11 days by ANAS President, members of the Presidium, heads of scientific institutions and organizations and specialists were delivered papers at both local and international meetings, published relevant articles, participated in discussions in the republic's mass media, round tables, and events held by the state. A meeting dedicated to the results of COP29 was held at the Presidium of ANAS and relevant decisions were made at the meeting.
Also, the new logo (emblem) of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences, the author of the idea of which was Academician Isa Habibbeyli was approved, the logo was registered and a Certificate was issued by the Intellectual Property Agency of the Republic of Azerbaijan.
One of the important events of the reporting year was the visit of Nobel Prize laureate, honorary member of ANAS, professor of the University of North Carolina, USA, Aziz Sanjar to ANAS. Aziz Sanjar's visit to ANAS was organized from May 30 to June 6, 2024, and meetings were held at scientific institutions of ANAS and higher schools of our republic. A special meeting of the General Assembly of ANAS was held with the participation of Aziz Sanjar, and he was presented with a diploma and certificate of honorary member of ANAS.
Academician Arif Hashimov also emphasized that ANAS has developed relations with various organizations in Turkey, and a new stage has begun in cooperation with TÜBİTAK. The agreement on mutual cooperation signed between ANAS and TÜBİTAK on February 28, 2024 is one of the important events that has prompted the Academy to achieve more significant results in the field of electronic services.
The report also emphasized that in 2024, important work was done to develop international scientific relations of ANAS, prospects for cooperation with scientific institutions of a number of foreign countries were discussed, foreign scientists, public-political and cultural figures, and representatives of international scientific organizations were guests of ANAS. Special attention was paid to cooperation with scientific institutions of Turkey, the People's Republic of China, Russia, Germany, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan, Pakistan, Iraq, Egypt, Georgia, Kyrgyzstan, and Bulgaria.
At the end of his speech, the academician noted that the research conducted in 2024 and the important scientific results achieved in the scientific institutions of the Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences and other scientific and higher education institutions of the republic in the scientific directions covered by it can be highly appreciated.
