Establishment history of the department: In 1993, by the decision of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Literature named after Nizami, the department of Ancient and Medieval Azerbaijani literature was separated into departments-“Ancient Azerbaijani Literature” and “Medival Azerbaijani literature”.
Heads of the department : Teymur Hashim oglu Karimli, doctor of Philology, was elected the head of the department in 1993.
Since 2008, Aliyar Gurbanali oglu Safarli, corresponding member of ANAS, doctor of Philology, professor leads in the department.
Well-known scientists of the department: Mirzeaga Guluzade, Azade Rustamova, Gafar Kendli, Vedjihe Feyzullazade, Alyar Safarli, Teymur Karimli, Khalil Yusifli, Chingiz Sasani.
Main activity directions:
1. Preparation and investigation for the publication of scientific and critical texts of literary monuments.
2. Investigation of history of Classical Azerbaijani literature, poetry of Divan Literature, development features of epic poetry and the creativity of the individual authors

Preperation of materials about multivolume history of Azerbaijani Literature.
